To demonstrate God's control of our circumstances together with His providence

4 - I prayed: God answers with a dream!

Not long after the experience of the laying on of hands, the college semester ended.  While in a Wednesday evening youth group meeting before returning to Naples, I prayed my second prayer, silently of course.  It was a simple prayer.  Something on the order of “God, I am afraid that I will lose this connection with you when I leave Miami.  Can you show me a church to go to when I get home to Naples?”

The following Friday, I packed up and headed back to Naples.  It was that Friday night, at home, that God answered.  That night I had a dream in which I saw this little

church and, at the same time, an idea of the general geographical area in Naples that the church seemed to be in; nothing more.  The next morning, thinking that the dream was perhaps an answer to my prayer, I asked my Dad if he was aware of a church in that general area.  There was one he was aware of and, after he described it, I determined to visit it.  Suffice it to say that on arrival I was disappointed to find that it was not the church I had seen in the dream.  Oh well.

The following week, I secured a temporary job working for a landscaping and nursery business; the workplace being located about five miles from my home.  Since my car was being repaired at the time, my employer made an arrangement to pick me up for the week.  The next day my ride did not show and I decided to walk to work.  Funny thing, as I started out on the five mile walk I remember thinking of a bible verse that I had read that stated “….all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose” and decided to look at this walk with that mindset.  Did not really expect that to prove to be the reality it became.

The route to work took me through the geographical area I had seen in the dream.  As I was walking along, I saw a sign pointing down a little side road.  The sign advertised a church and my curiosity was raised.  I decided to walk down that way to see what I would see.  Imagine my thoughts when, upon arriving in front of the church, I recognized it for the little church I had seen in the dream. A new church, just opened.

Since it was the church I saw in the dream, I knew that God had answered my prayer.  I was pretty happy and have to admit that the remaining steps on the way to my job were a bit jaunty.  The following Sunday, I showed up to see what I would see.  Check out the next page, “5 – God’s providence: things work out!”, to follow up on this experience.

Notes

What do I make of the experience I had with respect to my prayer asking God to show me a church to go to when I arrived in Naples?

First, God can hear our prayers even when they are little more than vocalized in our minds, i.e., He can read our minds.  Second, He responds to prayer; sometimes immediately, sometimes over time. Third, He is able to, and willing to, communicate directly with an individual when He so chooses; in this case he utilized a dream….sort of like a video clip….while I slept to show me a church to attend.  Fourth, God’s response demonstrates the validity of the scriptures mentioned earlier which say “…you will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart…”

God communicates with us in many ways.

One of those ways is through dreams.  Some of the examples that are found in the Bible are found in the scriptures below.  I suspect that down through the years, God has done so many times but because such things are ridiculed by many these days, they are rarely acknowledged.
