36 - Tallahassee: God's providence!

It was now late 2002 and things were pretty well wrapped up with respect to the case involving Citizens Utilities Company.  In addition, I had completed the project for the Barton Village Municipal Electric Utility and that position had come to an end.  The job market at that time all across the country was tight with few positions available.  End result: no job and no savings….we were stranded!  The only things we had to our name were our personal possessions, the van that the bank never repossessed, and our home with the mortgage payments a couple of months in arrears.

Trial without end with every year seemingly looking bleaker.  Back in 1997, during the Citizens Utilities Company litigation, the lawyers representing the other utilities suggested I file a lawsuit for wrongful discharge.  The case was

moving forward favorably from their (and my) perspective and there was every reason to believe I would prevail should I choose to file suit.  On giving it some thought, rather than filing a lawsuit as they suggested, I made a decision to follow an example set by Abraham (found in Genesis: Chapters 14: 12-24).  Essentially, Lot (the nephew of Abraham) was taken captive in a war between different kings and kingdoms and Abraham went to his rescue with 318 men.  After rescuing Lot along with the other captives and the treasures that had been taken and returning them to Sodom, the King of Sodom offered to reward Abraham.  Abraham refused saying: “I have lift up my hand unto the Lord, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth, That I will not take from a thread even to a shoe latchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich….”.  Like Abraham, I had trusted God who had promised me the victory over the Citizens Utilities Company and, like Abraham, I determined to trust that God would provide for the future for Pat and I.  Yet here we stood, Pat and I, at the brink of financial ruin.

I had noted during my search for a new position that the market for electrical engineers was much better in Florida than anywhere else in the country.  With that in mind, and knowing that Pat’s folks lived in Orlando, Florida, I called them and asked for help.  The short of it was that they agreed, sent us some funds to make the move and gave us room and board for three months while I attempted to find a position in Florida.  The only bright light in the picture was that during that time we were able to sell our house and ended up with a little money left over.  It was at the end of the three months that God intervened and began to change things.  It happened like this.

We had reached the point that staying with Pat’s folks while searching for a position was no longer comfortable and decided, job or no job, to move out and lease an apartment and let the chips fall where they may.  As we walked out of the house that morning and climbed in the car, Pat’s mom ran out to catch us and said that the City of Tallahassee was on the phone to talk to me about a position with their municipal electric department as a senior electrical engineer.  A breath of fresh air saving us from making a major mistake.  Within a couple weeks of relocating to Tallahassee and assuming my new position, Pat had acquired a new position working for the school system in the same capacity she had held in Vermont; a position that similarly provided a great team environment and enjoyable position.  After walking with me through the many trials and experiences described in this website in which God made me aware of his reality, I hope you have come to recognize that there is no such thing as a coincidence; that as I noted in the story “17 – Everything is in good hands!”, God is in control.

Tallahassee turned out to be a great job; an enjoyable position and a great team to work with.  In addition, after retirement in 2016, Tallahassee’s pension system combined with our Social Security benefits have provided us with a comfortable living.  We have a beautiful home, paid for, and live in a great community (Crawfordville; adjacent to Tallahassee).  We have some nice “toys”: a nice pontoon boat, a camper, a workshop, a dog, and two cats.  Short of it is that God has not simply restored to us what we had lost during those previous seven years but has given us more than that which we lost during that period.  It has been a time of peace; hence the graphic attached to this web page.

But does our story, our relationship with God, end at this point?  Not at all; for at this point the story changes from God’s interaction with respect to our personal lives to one of God’s interaction with respect to events beyond our personal lives; events that effect us all.  In order to keep this distinction clear, I have decided to describe those and any future events in the BLOG which is a part of this website.

Notes

What do I make of the experience Pat and I had with respect to our time in Tallahassee?

Like Abraham who chose to trust God with his future, I chose to trust God for our future….and, like Abraham, God has blessed us over and above that which would otherwise have been.  It is like the scripture says:  “…Whosoever believeth on Him shall not be ashamed.”

Some scriptural references

1 Samuel 2:30  (KJV)   “…..for them that honour me I will honour,…..”

Romans 10: 11  (KJV)  “For the scripture says, “Whosoever believes in Him shall not be ashamed.””

Psalm 118: 8-9  (NASB)  “It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man.  It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.”
